Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange had to cancel classes today due to an unforeseen power outage caused by a blown transformer, and school officials have announced this afternoon that the school will remain closed tomorrow, Friday, October 13, 2023. Florida Power and Light (FPL) has been on site since 5 a.m. this morning, addressing the issue, with the earliest estimate for a temporary fix being tomorrow evening.
The transformer failure led to a disruption of crucial equipment at the school, necessitating the cancellation of classes for today and tomorrow. However, missed instructional time will be absorbed into the school schedule, and these two days will not need to be made up, as confirmed by Dr. Sparger, Principal of Spruce Creek High School in an auto-dialer message to students and their families.
Despite the power outage, athletic events scheduled for tonight and tomorrow at other school campuses will proceed as planned, and students are encouraged to contact their coaches or sponsors for information concerning other activities scheduled for Spruce Creek’s campus.
Additionally, Monday is already a designated student holiday, and fortunately, the school's air conditioning remains unaffected by the power outage. Therefore, teachers will report to school on Monday for their Teacher Duty Day, and first-quarter grades will still be available on Monday for students. Classes at Spruce Creek High School will resume on Tuesday, October 17, with generators on-site providing a temporary solution to the ongoing power issue.
The school administration and Florida Power and Light are working diligently to rectify the situation and ensure a smooth resumption of classes and activities for the students and staff at Spruce Creek High School.
