By Cathy Padilla
If you're looking to learn how to raise chickens in your own back yard, the Volusia County Agriculture Center in DeLand is offering a class for $15 per household. In recent years, raising chickens and enjoying fresh eggs in suburban and urban settings have had a notable surge in popularity. Join the trend and learn how to get started at the Backyard Urban Chicken Class from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 22.
Led by Ashley Stonecipher, an agent from the UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County, this class will cover various aspects of chicken care. Ashley Stonecipher will address topics such as chicken breeds, proper housing, general health care, nutrition, food safety, and determining if your property is suitable for raising backyard poultry.
The $15 registration fee is per household, and each registration is applicable to all family members residing at the same address. Registration and payment can be made here.
In addition to gaining valuable knowledge and teaching materials, participants will receive a certificate of completion. If you are interested and unable to attend the class, there will be classes offered on April 11, July 11, and Oct. 24. For additional details or inquiries, contact Ashley Stonecipher at 386-822-5778 or email ams2904@ufl.edu.
