Ponce Inlet Lights Up Red for World Encephalitis Day on February 22
The Town of Ponce Inlet joins the global community in observing World Encephalitis Day on Thursday, February 22. This day serves as a vital reminder of the challenges faced by individuals affected by encephalitis and aims to raise awareness about this rare, but serious, condition. In a display of solidarity and support, the Ponce Inlet Town Hall, Fire Department, and Police Department will be bathed in radiant red lights Thursday evening.
On the morning of the 22nd, at 9 a.m. at Ponce Inlet Town Hall (4300 S Atlantic Ave), former Port Orange Councilmember Kat Atwood, who battled misdiagnoses for months before correctly identifying encephalitis, will accept the proclamation from Ponce Inlet Mayor Lois Paritsky. Atwood is on a mission to raise awareness about this condition, emphasizing its seriousness and impact.
World Encephalitis Day, observed annually on February 22, provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of understanding, recognizing, and preventing encephalitis. By illuminating prominent buildings throughout Ponce Inlet in striking red hues, the town seeks to spark conversations and engage the community in learning more about this often overlooked neurological disorder. Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain that can be caused by infectious agents, autoimmune disorders, or other factors. It often results in a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, including fever, headache, seizures, and changes in behavior. In some cases, encephalitis can lead to long-term neurological complications, making early detection and intervention crucial.
