Volusia County Schools (VCS) is proud to announce the first annual Home Run 5K on Saturday, April 15, at 8 a.m., also known as Jackie Robinson Day, which commemorates and honors the day Jackie Robinson made his debut in Major League Baseball.
The 5K race commences at 8 a.m. when Dr. Balgobin and Shelldon, the Tortuga’s mascot, start the race together at Jackie Robinson Ballpark at 105 E. Orange Ave in Daytona Beach. Kids aged 12 and under can run the bases for free at 9:15 a.m., making it a special day of fun, camaraderie, fitness, and commemoration.
VCS schools and departments have formed teams to compete, and community members can participate in the race for an entry fee. The first 300 finishers will receive medals, while the top finishers receive Tortuga hats, and the first 40 kids to run the bases at the ballpark will receive a Daytona Tortugas baseball.
