On Monday, July 3, 2023, Deric Shropshire, 30, of South Daytona, entered a 7-11 convenience store at 170 N Nova Road in Ormond Beach armed with a machete and wearing a face covering, demanding all the cash within the establishment. Shropshire grabbed the store clerk and guided them to the cash register. Complying with Shropshire's demands, the victim unlocked both cash registers, allowing the suspect to acquire an undisclosed sum of money before fleeing the scene on foot.
The Ormond Beach Police Department was alerted of the robbery and swiftly dispatched officers to the location, conducting an extensive search of the vicinity; however, according to police, they could not locate the suspect.
Detectives with the Ormond Beach Police Department arrived to investigate, where they were able to develop a lead on a suspect. Utilizing a photographic lineup and video surveillance footage of the incident, the police department identified Deric Shropshire as the robbery suspect with the help of his probation officer.
Detectives located Shropshire's address in South Daytona and took him into custody without incident near Beville Road and Golfview Boulevard. Shropshire now faces charges related to aggravated assault, battery, robbery with a weapon, and violation of probation.
"I couldn't be prouder of our officers and investigators for taking this violent felon into custody," said Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey. "They showed great resolve and teamwork in their efforts to protect our community!"
