The Florida League of Cities has recognized Mayor Don Burnette of Port Orange with a Home Rule Hero Award, for his unwavering dedication and advocacy efforts during the 2023 Legislative Session, his commitment to promoting local voices, and preserving the Home Rule powers of Florida's municipalities.

According to a release, Home Rule refers to the authority granted to cities to address local issues using local solutions, with minimal interference from the state.

"The league and its legislative team appreciate the individual advocacy efforts undertaken by municipal officials throughout the state,” said FLC Chief of Legislative Affairs Casey Cook. “Home rule heroes are some of our biggest advocates for protecting local decision-making. These league members stand out for their high level of participation, knowledge, and effectiveness. This year’s home rule heroes continuously advocated for their communities throughout the 2023 legislative session.”

Mayor Don Burnette has been serving as the Mayor of Port Orange since 2016, following his election to the City Council in 2010, representing District 2. His educational background includes graduation from Spruce Creek High School, earning a Bachelor's and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Central Florida.

The Home Rule Hero Award recognizes elected and non-elected local government officials who consistently respond to the League's call to engage with members of the Legislature, providing valuable local perspectives on various issues.
