Flood Insurance Savings Possible in Port Orange

Flood insurance can add an extra level of security for you and your family as homeowners’ insurance typically does not cover damage from flooding. As premiums increase or providers drop coverage, now may be an ideal time for Port Orange residents, renters, and business owners to take advantage of their ability to access federally-backed flood insurance through FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

NFIP offers potential cost savings, with premiums varying based on risk. Approximately 25 percent of all flood claims occur in moderate- to low-risk areas, with premiums starting as low as $119 per year. Port Orange holds a Class 5 community designation through FEMA's Community Rating System (CRS), allowing all residents with FEMA flood insurance to receive a 25% discount on their annual premiums. This discount is made possible by the city's implementation and enforcement of measures to reduce risks associated with construction in flood hazard areas, protecting new buildings beyond the minimum NFIP protection level, and reducing flood damage to existing buildings.

Participation in the CRS enables residents to benefit from these savings, with communities rated on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best, based on their flood risk management efforts. Each class improvement results in an additional 5% discount on flood insurance premiums. Port Orange is one of only 218 communities nationwide to earn a class 5 rating or better, with just 2 cities holding a class 1 rating.
