As recently reported, mosquito season is upon us here in Volusia County. As such, the county is ramping up efforts to combat the growth of mosquito populations, with ongoing efforts to eliminate containers where mosquitos lay eggs.

Being old tires are a common ground for mosquitoes to lay their eggs, Volusia County Mosquito Control will be holding two tire amnesty events from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, October 9 at River Breeze Park off H.H. Burk Road in Oak Hill and Holly Hill Public Works of LPGA in Holly Hill.

Only residential tires will be accepted with a limit of 20 tires per person. There is no cost to drop off tires.

Social Distancing measures will be practiced, and masks are required for Volusia County employees while working in close contact with others. Residents must unload their tires into the dumpster.

Other steps residents can take include tip or toss containers that gather water weekly and wear mosquito repellent to avoid bites.

Additional tips to prevent mosquito bites include:

  • Toss bottles, cans, pots, and broken appliances.
  • Turn over empty pots and buckets.
  • Replace water in birdbaths and pet dishes at least once a week.
  • Don’t overwater the lawn.
  • Clean out eaves, troughs, and gutters.
  • Drain water from boats and tarps.
  • Maintain the proper chemistry in swimming pools.
  • Empty plastic pools when not in use.
