As temperatures are forecasted to plummet below 40 degrees tonight, Monday, December 18, Volusia County Officials will open multiple cold weather shelters to provide crucial refuge for those without adequate heating and those experiencing homelessness.

In West Volusia, The Neighborhood Center's The Bridge, located at 421 S. Palmetto Avenue in DeLand, will be ready to welcome individuals in need. To secure shelter, individuals must arrive no later than 6 p.m. For further information or assistance, please call 386-734-8120 ext. 601.

Residents in Eastern Volusia County will find shelter through the coordinated efforts of Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) and local churches. Those in need should contact HUM at 386-317-5886 to make arrangements for shelter.

Any resident needing assistance to reach these shelters should contact the respective organization on their side of the county to inquire about available transportation services.

Volusia County is known for its mild temperatures. However, it's essential to remember that winter can bring its own set of challenges. Despite our region's reputation for a pleasant climate, cold weather can be dangerous to people, pets, and property. Being prepared for these cold spells is crucial for your safety and comfort.

Here are some tips to help you stay warm and safe during the colder months:

Dressing for the Cold:

  • Layer Up: Wearing multiple layers of clothing helps trap body heat. Don't forget to include a hat and gloves in your winter wardrobe.

  • Stay Dry and Out of the Wind: Wet conditions and wind chill can rapidly lower your body temperature, increasing the risk of hypothermia.

Pet Safety:

  • Bring Pets Indoors: Cold weather is just as hard on animals as on people. If you have outdoor pets, bring them inside or ensure they have a warm shelter, and make sure they have enough fresh, unfrozen water.

Protecting Your Home:

  • Pipe Care: To prevent your pipes from freezing, cover them and let your faucets drip slowly during cold spells.

  • Plant Protection: Cover cold-sensitive plants to shield them from frost damage.

Safe Heating Practices:

  • Avoid Unsafe Heating Sources: Never use fuel-burning devices like grills indoors, as they can release deadly carbon monoxide.

  • Space Heater Safety: If you use space heaters, follow the manufacturer's instructions and never leave them unattended.

Wildlife Caution:

  • Be Aware of Displaced Wildlife: Cold weather can drive wild animals closer to human habitats. Be cautious around wild or feral animals, especially if they look sick or injured.
