The Volusia County Sheriff's Office apprehended a carjacking suspect in Daytona Beach with the help of the Daytona Beach Police Department and SWAT deputies following a high-stakes standoff that lasted nearly an hour.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:23 a.m. at a BP gas station at 1094 Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach, where Anthony Galloway, 42, approached a customer who was pumping gas, demanding the victim's money, car keys, and advised him to " keep pumping the gas or I will shoot you" before making off in the victim's silver Toyota Corolla, driving southbound on Derbyshire Road. Deputies acquired video surveillance footage from the gas station that captured the harrowing encounter and helped positively identify Galloway.
According to a release, Galloway later abandoned the vehicle near an apartment complex on Brentwood Drive, where the suspect ran into an apartment building and then jumped out of a back second-story window. Witnesses also reported that Galloway ran into a warehouse near 504 Mason Avenue along the Florida East Coast railroad. FEC stopped all trains, and law enforcement blocked traffic on Mason Avenue while Sheriff and SWAT deputies, along with Daytona Beach Police surrounded the facility.
As Galloway refused to comply with law enforcement's demands for him to surrender peacefully, SWAT units breached a locked door, finally bringing the standoff to an end around 10:50 a.m.
Galloway was arrested without further incident and taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for medical treatment of cuts believed to be sustained during the break-in and jump from the nearby apartment. Once Galloway receives medical clearance, he will be in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
