The suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the Sunoco located at 2501 W. International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach has died after stabbing a Daytona Beach Officer in the face.

According to reports, the suspect was trespassed from the Sunoco property earlier in the day, prompting the business owner to call law enforcement when the man returned to the property after 9 a.m. Upon arriving on the scene, a Daytona Beach Police Officer and a Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputy, who happened to be in the parking lot as a patron to the business, tried to detain the man.

“A fight ensued when the deputy grabbed the suspect's left arm. The Daytona Beach officer's body camera was knocked off,” said Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young. "My officer sustained a laceration to the face after being stabbed by the suspect. He fired two shots, and the suspect has passed away from those gunshots.”

“The Sheriff’s Deputy body cam footage shows how the man pulled a knife out of his pocket and stabbed the officer. As the Daytona officer goes to grab his right arm, you see he comes up with the knife," said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Paramedics took the officer and suspect to Halifax Health Medical Center, where the suspect succumbed to his injuries. The officer did not sustain life-threatening injuries, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the incident.
