Attempted Security Breach at Daytona Beach International Airport
John Greenwood, age 25, is in custody of Volusia County Sheriff’s Department at Health Medical Center after an attempted security breach this morning at Daytona Beach International Airport.
Around 6AM Friday morning, Volusia County Sheriff’s received the first call of a naked male running around in the terminal. Deputies who responded to the incident had to use a taser on Greenwood who was on the baggage carousel trying to get out under the Tarmac.
While under custody, Greenwood began to shout “You gotta get out of here. A bomb is going to go off. I planted a bomb in the bathroom.”
Deputies immediately began searching restrooms in the airport and came across a Women’s Restroom that was under construction. According to Sheriff Chitwood, deputies could see there was something behind a piece of sheetrock which prompted them to call the bomb squad.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the terminal was evacuated and VCSO bomb units cleared the building. No bomb or explosive devices were found.
Greenwood is well-known to law enforcement agencies in Daytona Beach. Greenwood has an extensive record and has been Baker Acted twice.
Greenwood told deputies that he had taken the drug “Molly” along with other substances last night.
Sheriff Chitwood stated “airport management and TSA did a great job working with the VCSO deputies.”
