Volusia County finished the last 3.6-mile segment of its contribution to the East Central Regional Rail Trail.

The East Central Regional Rail Trail is a project that began in 2001 and is scheduled to be completed by 2025. The trail will run through five counties, totaling 260 miles in length, and connecting the Atlantic Ocean to The Gulf of Mexico.\

The State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection hopes the trail will bring cultural experiences to citizens and visitors. The new trail will run through places like Mims and Maytown, which has historical impacts on Florida, but the hope is to attract more environmentalists to the area.

The newly completed segment will be a part of a few other projects like the St. Johns River to Sea Loop, which connects Volusia, Flagler, Brevard, St. Johns, and Putnam counties, and the East Coast Greenway, an in-development trail, that will run along the eastern seaboard from Key West, Florida, to Calais, Maine.

The Department of Transportation and the Volusia County Council will be holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the County’s completed trail piece on May 20th. The event will be live streamed on the County of Volusia Facebook page.
