Volusia County Schools Announce School Closures Due to Hurricane Idalia
**Volusia County Schools Official Statement**
Dear Volusia County Schools Family,
As we continue to work with the county’s Emergency Operations Center to closely track Hurricane Idalia, the safety of our students and community members remains our highest priority.
As such, all Volusia County public school and district activities will cease at 8 p.m. this evening, and all schools and district offices will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 30. All school activities, events, and programs scheduled for Wednesday are canceled. Any VCS employee expected to report to work on Wednesday will be contacted by their supervisor. Make-up time for the lost instructional day will be announced in the near future.
At this time, we anticipate students will be able to return to school on Thursday, Aug. 31. However, we will continue assessing the situation and provide an update by mid-day on Wednesday.
As a reminder, the county has opened shelters in lieu of the district closing any schools for shelter. These shelters are located at the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County for individuals with special needs and the Volusia County Fairgrounds for the general population.
The VCS website (www.vcsedu.org/community/storm-resource-center) and social media channels will continue to be updated as more information becomes available. Please take this time to finish making preparations for the storm, and please follow any emergency orders from the county.
Sincerely,
Dr. Carmen Balgobin
Superintendent
