The Volusia County Council unanimously appointed Michael Ryan as the new Director of Community Information, following County Manager George Recktenwald's recommendation during Tuesday's council meeting. Ryan has over two decades of experience in the communications and marketing industry, which began after earning a bachelor's degree in journalism/communications from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Initially, he served as the Communications Director for a city in the Dallas/Fort Worth region. Later, Ryan assumed the role of Communications Director for St. Johns County, where he skillfully led a crisis communications team across multiple agencies during three major hurricanes and the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Ryan has leveraged his expertise as a communications and marketing consultant in the private sector across Northeast Florida.

Following the appointment, Ryan conveyed his appreciation to the County Council and County Manager Recktenwald for entrusting him with the responsibility to serve Volusia County.

Recognizing the commendable work accomplished by the existing team, Ryan spoke highly of their creativity, dedication, and demonstrated expertise in effective messaging. He also acknowledged the county's commitment to transparent and proactive communication regarding its numerous services, programs, and amenities for the residents.

In his new capacity as the Community Information Director, Ryan will oversee internal and external communications, public relations, marketing, and advertising for Volusia County, while providing support to county departments in fulfilling their communication requirements, coordinating emergency public information efforts, and maintaining the county's social media presence and websites. To carry out these responsibilities effectively, Ryan will supervise a team of marketing specialists, video production coordinators, graphic designers, web designers, and administrative support staff.

Marking the commencement of his tenure, Ryan will assume his new role on July 24.
