Once Ben Bartlett became public works director in July, Lori Koontz filled in as interim Road and Bridge Director. However, since she’s been performing well in the position, the Volusia County Council promoted her officially as Director during Tuesday’s Volusia County Council meeting.

“Lori has impeccable professional qualifications,” County Manager George Recktenwald told the council in presenting Koontz for confirmation. “She’s done a terrific job for the county already and is eminently qualified for the position of road and bridge director.”

For 28 years, Koontz worked for the Lake County Board of County Commissioners and left in August 2019 for Volusia County. She used to oversee bridge maintenance operations as Road and Bridge Division Deputy Director before rising. Because of that experience, Koontz has helped secure and manage $4.2 million in water quality-related grant funding for stormwater projects.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and proud to be a member of the road and bridge division,” said Koontz, moments after she was unanimously confirmed by the council. “They are a group of hard-working and dedicated employees who work to solve problems and make a difference for the citizens of Volusia and the traveling public.”

County Chair Jeff Brower also noted how important this role is to the public.

“You have a big job ahead,” Brower told Koontz. “It’s an important job to the community, and we welcome you and thank you in advance for your service. Congratulations.”
