The Volusia County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday that the human remains found inside a submerged vehicle off Pioneer Trail in New Smyrna Beach are confirmed to be the missing Port Orange teacher, Robert Heikka.
The 2012 white Chevrolet Impala was discovered in a canal off State Road 44, between Pioneer Trail and State Road 415, on Saturday afternoon after a volunteer search team notified the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, they had found a car with tags that matched Mr. Heikka's.
Mr. Heikka was a Volusia County teacher since 1989 and started teaching at Creekside in 2002, before his disappearance on October 25, 2020.
